Swim School

Coogee Diggers learn to swim program is a skills based program for children 3 years and over. Your child will be assessed and placed in a class based on their ability. Beginners are taught new skills over short distances, as your child progresses through the levels and they start to master important skills we then increase the distance that your child will practice over.

Swimming is a difficult skill to learn and takes time and practice, constant positive reinforcement is needed to keep swimmers on target to grasp the skills. Remember, once a skill is mastered your child needs to continue practicing it because it may be used in the next level.

Our main goal is to provide a safe and fun environment for your child to learn in, we feel that enjoyment is essential to learning. Remember that your child will progress at his/her own pace, so encourage their progress, try to attend all classes and include swimming in your family’s recreational activities.

LOBSTER (3:1)

Students will learn to:

  • Kick using an aid
  • Blow bubbles with face submerged
  • Front & back float using an aid
  • Dog paddle unassisted
  • Jump into the pool

 

STARFISH (4:1)

Students will learn to:

  • Submerge whole body under surface of water
  • Front & back float unassisted
  • Torpedo
  • Big arms
  • Basic backstroke arms
  • Bubble/breathe concept

 

TURTLE (4:1)

Students will learn to:

  • Submerge whole body to the bottom of the pool
  • Push & glide
  • Bubble Arm, breathing Arm

 

PLATYPUS (4:1)

Students will learn:

  • Correct freestyle breathing technique
  • Correct backstroke technique
  • Freestyle & backstroke push start

 

SHARK (5:1)

  • Students will learn:
  • To develop freestyle & backstroke endurance
  • Breaststroke kick

 

STINGRAY (6:1)

Students will:

  • Learn breaststroke & dolphin kick
  • Increase endurance
  • Introduce basic tumble turn techniques

 

MARLIN (8:1)

In this 30 minute squad swimmers will receive:

  • Advanced stroke correction in freestyle, backstroke & breaststroke
  • Introduce butterfly arms to learn complete stroke
  • Continue to work on diving
  • Learn backstroke starts
  • Learn how to use the pace clock
  • Increase distance & aerobic fitness

 

DOLPHIN (8:1)

In this 45 minute squad swimmers will:

  • Develop butterfly rhythm & technique
  • Master breaststroke technique
  • Master diving skills
  • Increase distance & aerobic fitness

 

DEVELOPMENT: MINNOWS (1 X 60 min per week)

  • Introduction to medley swimming
  • Push turns and competition dives
  • Development of key race skills, using the clock and aerobic base

 

DEVELOPMENT: STARS (2 X 60 min per week)

  • Mastering all turns and competition dives
  • Further development of aerobic base with bigger emphasis on technique driven freestyle and longer intervals across all four strokes
  • Introduction to competitive swimming

 

COMPETITIVE (3 X 60 - 75 min per week)

  • Introduction to training sets and programming
  • Aimed at junior swimmers wishing to be competitive within swimming, surf-lifesaving and open water

 

FIT 2 SWIM (1 X 60 min per week)

This group aims to get the swimmers aerobically fit whilst having fun

  • Introduction to training sets and programming.
  • Aimed at junior swimmers wishing to be competitive within swimming, surf-lifesaving and open water
  • Fit 2 Swim is a program created for juniors not wishing to be involved with the competitive side of swimming

 

SENIOR SQUAD (3 X 60 min available on casual basis)

Senior squad is a program directed at delivering swimmers 14 and over results in surf lifesaving, triathlon and masters swimming.
